Mansarovar Lake, Tibet

Lake Manasarovar (15,060 feet above sea level) is a freshwater lake in the Tibet, 940 kilometres from Lhasa. To the west of Lake Manasarovar is Lake Rakshas Tal (Demon Lake); and towards the north is Mount Kailash.

Lake Mansarovar is the source of four major rivers of Asia, the Satluj (tributary of Indus), Brahmaputra, Indus and Karnali (tributary of Ganges).

This lake has a spiritual significance in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.

As per Hinduism, one who drinks it’s water is believed to be cleansed of all sins committed over even a hundred lifetimes.

In Buddhism, it is believed that Queen Maya conceived Buddha at this lake. Buddha is himself believed to have visited it later and the great teacher of Buddhism, Guru Padmasambhava spent many years in this region.

As per Jainism, Mansarovar is associated with first Tirthankar, Lord Shree Rushabhdev, where he attained Nirvana.

During my visit to Tibet, I spent a night here and photographed the lake, with the views of Mount Kailash, Mount Namo Nangi and the adjoining waterbody that connects Mansarovar to Rakshas Tal.
