In search of the Monpas – Zimithang (Series 1)

The village of Zimithang lies 80 Km from Tawang in the north-western corner of Arunachal Pradesh (India), a remote last post, sandwiched between Bhutan and China. It doesn’t get any tourist flow.

I headed in search of the unpretentious Monpa (Buddhists of Tibetan origin) settlements at the head of this wide scenic valley carved by river Namjang Chu, flowing into India from Tibet.

As we entered the valley, we were advised not to eat anything offered by the villagers as the legend goes that once in a while they poison food to sacrifice someone for their Karmic benefits. I don’t know if there is any element of truth in that but surely I found the villagers to be most hospitable and it was a photographers feast.

I came back with loads of photos and will be sharing in two series. This is the first of the two and second to follow soon.
