Tiger’s nose

I now realize, it was a strange quest that had made me a pilgrim without God, a wanderer from Himalayas to New York, seeking a place where the mind could rest. I have gazed into faces hoping to hear the mysterious echo that would satisfy me!

One such journey, performed a few years back in the remote regions of Ladakh (India), I had positioned it to myself as a photography trip but knew well that I was basically searching for the voice that I have yet to hear.

Stakna monastery in Ladakh, lies along the shallow waters of river Indus at about 25 km from Leh. It is this very Indus, into which the five rivers of Punjab, the Ravi, Sutlej, Beas, Jhelum and Chenab, merge in the land of Pakistan, before it falls into Arabian sea. Stakna monastery was founded in the late 16th century by the Bhutanese scholar, Chosje Jamyang Palkar. Stakna literally means, “tiger’s nose” because it is built on a hill shaped like it.
